The Area Education Representative is Vanessa Wellock. Vanessa is a member of Ilkley Flower club and presently the Chair of the club, she is also a NAFAS National Demonstrator, and teacher.
The Deputy Education Representative is Christine Hinchcliffe. Christine is currently President of Headingley Flower Club at Bramhope, and a member of Barwick in Elmet and New Dimensions Flower Clubs. She is a NAFAS Area Demonstrator and teacher.
Education in the North East Area
Vanessa has taken on the role of Education for the area with Christine as her deputy. The education group meet twice a year in March and September at Wigginton Recreation Hall, The Village, Wigginton, York, YO32 2PL. The group meet for coffee and spend the morning under the instruction of a tutor who leads the workshop. The group breaks for lunch and spends the afternoon creating their designs with the tutors guidance ending the day with the group coming together for feedback on their work. In April 2021 the education group held a virtual workshop with Francine Thomas from New Zealand as the tutor. NAFAS have introduced a new teaching course, details of which can be downloaded from their website at a cost of £5

North East Area Teachers
JUNE BORROWDALE (NATIONAL TEACHER) June is a Cert.Ed. Teacher and is on the NAFAS National List. June has completed a term of 4 years as a member of the National Education Committee, 3 years of which were spent as Editor of Insight, the NAFAS Educational Journal, with 3 issues being published each year. June taught floral art up to Diploma level at Doncaster College and floral art and floristry at North Nottinghamshire College for many years, until leaving to become an independent tutor. June is from Carlton-in-Lindrick near Worksop and will travel any distance to tutor workshops and day schools for flower clubs. She offers several topics for workshops, but prefers to create bespoke sessions tailored for individual clubs. She is a firm believer in ‘fun with flowers’ and her workshops are informative but relaxed and encouraging. June is a member of the North Midlands Area Teachers’ Association and an Area Judge and Area Demonstrator. She is currently Area President of the North Midlands Area of NAFAS. JAN FAULKNER (NATIONAL TEACHER) Jan is a National Teacher and an Area Demonstrator and lives in Great Ayton, North Yorkshire near Middlesbrough. SUSAN HALL Susan is an Area Teacher with qualifications in City and Guilds 7307 and 7900 parts 1 and 2. This was followed with a qualification in teaching. She has a passion for teaching people to create different designs, by introducing new ideas for them to explore and inspiring their creativity. Susan teaches traditional and contemporary flower arranging and is happy to plan workshops to suit the requirements of all flower clubs..
CHRISTINE HINCHCLIFFE Based in Leeds, Christine qualified as a NAFAS/ONC teacher in 2017 so is available for workshops. She is a member of Headingley Flower Club at Bramhope and New Dimensions. An enthusiastic floral designer Christine offers a great variety of designs from traditional through to modern and contemporary styles. Conscious of current trends she tries to share her love of plant material, flowers and art with her enthusiasm for modern design techniques. DAWN MEAKIN After receiving her NAFAS Diploma in 2011, and graduating with the Certificate in Education at Huddersfield University, Dawn became a NAFAS Area Teacher and Independent Floral Art Tutor. Dawn thoroughly enjoys travelling to flower clubs anywhere in the North East Area, even at short notice, to share her knowledge, to deliver workshops in an informative, but very friendly way to suit all levels and abilities. Many titles are available please contact her for a more tailored title for your club or event. Attendance at teachers refresher and education days are very important to Dawn to keep up to date with all the latest trends and techniques, along with lots of home independent study and experimentation. LUCY RICHARDSON (NATIONAL TEACHER) Lucy is both an Area and National teacher. She has many years’ experience in teaching floristry and now enjoys teaching workshops to flower clubs and floral art groups. She specialises in techniques, forms and structures, giving step by step instructions and encouraging people to develop their own design. She has travelled all over the UK teaching at many Area events, the National Teachers Symposium and the SAFAS Imbizo. She believes that teaching is about learning good mechanics, a new skill and enjoying yourself without the paperwork!
