The Chairman's Letter April 2024
Dear Members and Friends I think we are all in need of some sunshine and less wet weather as we turn into spring. Some plants however have really enjoyed the rain, such as the camellias and magnolias which have given a splendid show this year. I do love spring as it is the start of everything coming back to life and I think it is the same for us as we are able to get out more and meet people once again. I hope you will be able to enjoy going to your Clubs and seeing wonderful flowers being displayed and be inspired to have a go, even if it is just for your own home. The Area Education Day was held on 16th March. Our instructor, Dawn Weaver, showed us how to work with willow and gave lots of hints and tips along the way. There were two designs, for those who felt their hands could not cope with the willow. Everyone turned out some very respectable designs such as hearts, spheres and willow stands. The next Education Day is being held on 21st September at New Earswick Folk Hall and Sara Barrow will be the tutor. The Harrogate Spring Show is being held on 25th - 28rd April and I send my best wishes to anyone entering any of the classes. We will be staging the usual Area NAFAS stand, where the trading stall and The Flower Arranger magazine will be on sale, so do come along and say "Hello". This Show, with its floral art competition, is an important date in the flower arranger’s diary, offering as it does a chance to catch up with other flower arrangers and is now the biggest floral art competition in the country. This year there will be an exciting opportunity for exhibitors to take part in the ‘Your Front Cover’ class to create a design suitable for the front cover of the Flower Arranger magazine. The winner will receive a Harrogate Flower Show Award and have their design featured within the magazine. There will be a stand adjacent to the class to help promote subscriptions to the Flower Arranger magazine which will be manned by some of the board members. Our demonstration and workshops by Francine Thomas, an international designer from New Zealand, is rapidly approaching with tickets for the demonstration now available to purchase from the Joseph Rowntree Theatre. The workshops are full with only one person at present on the waiting list. Further dates for your diary:
9 - 12 July The Great Yorkshire Show.
26th -28th July Presidents Weekend in Glasgow “Highland Fling”.
15-18th August Southport Flower Show 100th Anniversary.
13th-15th September Harrogate Autumn Flower Show at Newby Hall
12th October Demonstrators’ Refreshers Day
12th October Speakers’ Refreshers Day
26th October 2024 Members’ Day
A good way to promote your club events and find out all the information you need to know about what is going on in the Area, is by using the website and media. If you are holding any celebrations or workshops at your club, please share them with other clubs by contacting Peter Mathers at [email protected] and Lynne Naylor at [email protected] I am sure both Peter and Lynne will be pleased with any information you have about the events that you are planning and photos after the event has taken place. Our next Council Meeting will be held at 1pm on the 20th April at New Earswick Folk Hall. I wish you all well and hope you have a lovely spring getting out and about. I look forward to seeing many of you, either at the Council meetings, visiting your clubs or at the shows and events that will be taking place this year. Best wishes
