Wakefield Flower Club was founded in 1959 by Mrs Margaret Herdson of Horbury, Wakefield. A qualified teacher of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana. A National judge and demonstrator and former President of the North East Area, Mrs Herdson was also involved in the founding of NAFAS.
The first Chairman was Mary Slater, Secretary Mollie Sheard and Treasurer Mary McKlusky. The future Chairman was Dorothy Birkinshaw who attended the first meeting and is a present day Honorary member. Members of the club have been arranging flowers at Pinderfields Hospital Chapel every week since 1963. Money for the chapel flowers are funded from a legacy from a former member Jean Hicks and donations from the League of Friends and club members.
